New Look Victoria Square opened its doors in August 2020 and has been thriving ever since. We wanted to get to know the faces behind the business so we had a quick chat with store managers Louise and Gary, to discuss the trendy retail store, what they love about running a business in Belfast and more!

Q & A with New Look, Victoria Square

Tell us about New Look, Victoria Square? (When did it open, who runs it, what is your role, how many do you employ?)

Louise: The Victoria Square store was supposed to open in March 2020 then lockdown 1.0 hit and we eventually opened at end of August 2020. I am the Store Manager and have been with New Look over 2 years, I love being in the City again! My role focuses on all commercial aspects which includes operations, leading a team and of course serving our beautiful customers.

Gary: I am the Deputy Store Manager and oversee the day to day running of the store, which includes supporting the team (we have 30 to 40 staff members) and putting the customer first at all times.

What does a typical Sunday look like for you – working and a day off

Louise: A typical Sunday in work focuses on service. It is about helping customers on the floor, in the fitting room, at the till and giving them a great shopping experience in this beautiful store.

A day off on a Sunday is being a mum. It would start with a little lie in, maybe a walk with the dogs, spending time with family. My husband usually barbeques steaks no matter what the weather is!

Gary: A typical Sunday in work is focussing on our lovely customers, trying to bring the craic into the shop with a bit of a 'Sunday Funday' atmosphere. Keeping tasking as minimal as possible.

A day off on a Sunday is being a dad (this is when I’m most happy), spending time with my family and their kids, walking the dog and creating as many memories as possible.

Where is your favourite place to get a bite to eat in the City Centre?

Louise: I love the food in the Kitchen bar or if it is a special occasion then I would choose Howard Street.

Gary: Flame has to be my first choice for food always.

What is one quote you live by?

Louise: Work hard, play hard.

Gary: Live laugh love - only joking! For me it has to be, “Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today.”

What are you most proud of in life?

Louise: My children and how well they are doing in life.

Gary: Being a dad and watching my daughter grow up. I need a pause button.

What are you looking forward to now restrictions have eased?

Louise: Being able to meet up with friends and family and living a bit of a normal life again.

Gary: I can’t wait to go to a concert.

What do you most love about working in Belfast City Centre?

Louise: I am a Belfast girl through and through and love the city! Victoria Square is an amazing place to work. You can feel the buzz in the city coming back again which I just love!

Gary: I have been working in retail since I was 16 and many of those years have been spent working in the City Centre. I’ve worked in other areas but nothing compares to the buzz of Belfast City Centre.
